COLONIALISM IN NORTH AMERICA I ‘The Thirteen Northern Colonies and the Importance of Not Being Born Important’ II The Story of Hannah Dustan and the War Against the Native Americans I ‘The Thirteen Northern Colonies and the Importance of Not Being Born Important’ In ‘The Thirteen Northern Colonies and the Importance of Not Being Born Important’, Galeano focuses on the qualitatively different experience of English colonialism in and around New England beginning in the 1600s – in comparison to the experience of Latin America. Unlike the southern North American colonies which were centered around plantation slavery (and therefore similar to the Spanish colonies), the colonies of New England were neither slave-based nor primarily export-oriented. The colonies of New England were conceived as a self-sustaining (though not isolated) settlement of what might be called ‘a community of equals’. The European model that the New England colonists referenced was not the colonia, but the small provincial town composed of free and independent farmers and craftsmen (plus a few indentured servants). With more settlers in possession of a small private surplus of wealth, they could trade with each other just as much as they might trade with other areas. These conditions favorable to internal commerce (based on creating a mass of people capable of consuming) stimulated the regional economy. These conditions, Galeano stresses, were generally absent in the Spanish colonies where the bulk of the population (the indigenous working class) was often in slavery, without a private surplus of wealth to consume with.
