Don t forget Newton s Third Law : Whatever object A is doing to object B, object B is doing the opposite to object A. (This is just a logical conclusion from the Conservation of Linear Momentum.) Your FBD shows the directions of the forces; you indicate those directions in the signs of your summation. In other words, all force values are magnitudes: F AB = F BA but F AB = F BA ± F = F net = m a (a logical conclusion of the de fi nition of force as an ingredient in an impulse: F ² t = ² P ) If ± F = 0, this doesn’t mean the object is at rest. It means it’s not accelerating . An object requires no net force to move .
