Audrey The American Colonization Society was established in 1817 by a group of white Virginian to assist black people to move out of the country to the West coast of Africa and assist them to establish a society of their own. The organization was founded to satisfy two groups at the time: one consists of those who want to free slaves and give them a chance to have a better life in Africa, and the other of white owners who fear that blacks would drive them off their own land. The organization raised an issue that divided both whites and blacks. Some think that blacks can never have a better life if they remain in America. Others argue that blacks can receive full rights and should stay and fight for their race. The ACS was the first organization to take on the problem of slavery in early America. William Lloyd Garrison is best known to be the founder of the abolitionist newspaper Liberator and also as one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society.
