Pro/E Lab - Designing your part for rapid prototyping and sand casting 1 Objective The objective of this lab is to use Pro/ENGINEER to both model a typical pattern used in sand-casting of your own personal design created by Rapid Prototyping using either the SLA, FDM, or Eden prototyping machines. In the course of the lab you should develop an appreciation for the power and flexibility that ProE brings to the manufacturing process as well as becoming familiar with the design requirements for creating a pattern for use in sand-casting. 2 Design Requirements Your part must stay within a volume defined by a 3.6” by 2” by 0.5” block (Figure 1). Since we are using Rapid Prototyping to generate part, you should attempt to design features that would be difficult to otherwise make by traditional means. Figure 1 – Dimensions of the block that you must stay within. Design Requirements for a pattern that can be used in a sand-casting lab: (1) Your part must have multiple 3D features. (for example, a slot with varying depth is a 3D feature while a slot with constant depth is a 2D feature). 2”
