ECE 3030: Electromagnetic Fields and Waves Fall 2009 WORKSHOP 4 INSTRUCTOR NOTES: Magnetic Fields Reminder: Prelim next week No homework set 4! Date: Tuesday 9/24 1. Remind students of Prelim 1 next Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm. Coverage includes material through this Workshop, through Homework 4, through Lecture 10, and through Chapter 6 of the text. 2. There will be no Demo 5 section next week due to evening prelim, but there will be Workshop 5 sections next Thursday. 3. There will be no Homework 4 due next Tuesday (day of prelim). 4. Problem 5.11 A perfectly conducting metal sphere is surrounded by a perfectly conducting metal spherical shell. These are connected to a battery, as shown in the picture to the right. Completely ignore the physical presence of the voltage source and the connecting wires other than noting that they establish a fixed potential difference. The space between the inner and outer spheres consists of two different dielectric layers, as shown. a. Write the functional forms for the potentials Φ 1 ( ~ r) and Φ 2 ( ~ r) in the two dielectric regions a r b and b r c , respectively. b. Write down all the boundary conditions (at least as many as the number of unknown constants in your answer to part (a) above) relevant to solving for the potentials, Φ 1 ( ~ r) and Φ 2 ( ~ r).
