Start to think about sampling. 1. A communication link with multipath interference. Multipath interference occurs when a transmitted signal reaches a receiver via several different paths, each with a potentially dif- ferent attenuation and delay. Different paths occur because the signal may bounce off reflectors (e.g., mountains or buildings), along with travelling directly to the receiver. All of the signals interfere with each other, hence the name, and can cause difficulties at the receiver. Consider a DT model of a transmission system with multipath interference, as drawn below: Consider an especially bad multipath situation, in which the delayed signal is not attenuated at all, i.e. . The direct path has a delay of 10; the “delayed, attenuated signal” has a relative delay of 5, which corresponds to a total delay of 15. In this case, the received signal is given by The transmission system can be modelled as a DT filter with impulse response and system function .
