Terminology Variables: Dependent vs independent variables. Independent variables are often called factors. Extraneous variables are all variables other than the independent variables that affect the response of the test units, e.g., external noise in background music study. The objects upon which measurements are taken are called test/experimental units. Example: 10 subjects participate in an experiment. Each subject is an test unit. n = 10 is the sample size.

Choose appropriate factors and treatments: Must be measurable. Decide on the number of factors ( choose important variables only). Factors can be quantitative/ qualitative. Example: F1 = amount of lighting is quantitative. F2 = types of music is qualitative. The intensity setting of a factor is called a level. Often one of the levels will be the control.
