REALITY THEORY CASE APPLICATION
2
Theoretical Framework and Application: Reality Theory
With every client case, there are a myriad of psychotherapy models from which a
counselor can implement as the foundation of the therapeutic sessions. Although most
contemporary counselors use a more eclectic approach- pulling skills and techniques from
multiple models at various times- they still typically operate under the assumption of one major
underlying theory (Kottler and Montgomery, 2016).
In this manuscript, an examination of how the skills, techniques, and evidence-based
interventions that were conceived in reality theory can be applied to the case study of Edna
Macabre, which will then be juxtaposed to the similar skills and techniques utilized in existential
therapy. Following the specific plan for Edna (using those techniques), the appropriateness of the
application of reality theory to her will be analyzed. Additionally, an exploration of other various
cultural considerations to be had when using this theory with diverse populations will be
discussed.
Finally, a succinct overview of how reality theory aligns with this author’s personal and
professional views will be afforded.
Theoretical Application: Reality/Choice Theory
Client Summary: Edna Macabre
Client is a 56-year-old African American female who is a pious Christian. She is unhappy
at her job and her perpetual low-income status, upset that she never went to college to be a nurse
and to get a “good job”. She has thought of going back to school, but she feels “too old”. She is
dissatisfied with her husband for not making her happy, feeling he has grown complacent. She
was once very close with her daughter, Laura, but has found it difficult to accept her after she
recently disclosed that she is a lesbian, and they are rapidly growing apart. She used to go to the

gym, which made her happy, but she feels she’ll never look like she used to so there is no point.
Edna is feeling isolated, depressed about her deteriorating health and looks, and is financially
stressed.
Case Goals, Techniques, and Interventions Using Reality Theory
A few important target goals for Edna would be to get her signed up for college classes,
as she has always wanted to go to college to become a nurse, and also get her back on a gym
regimen because it helps with her depression and negative self-image. These goals are good fits
