The purpose of this lab is to be able to understand the Zener Diode as well as its characteristics that distinguish it from other diodes. Also, another main objective of this lab is to figure out and understanding the reverse breakdown voltage of the Zener Diode. Theory: The Zener Diode, discovered by Clarence Zener, is an electrical property used in small circuits to regulate voltage. The Zener Diode is different from the standard diode in that it allows current to travel in the forward direction, as well as the reverse direction if the voltage happens to be larger than the breakdown voltage. This breakdown voltage is also known as the “Zener voltage.” The Zener voltage is designed and manufactured to have a very specific reverse breakdown voltage, as well as a sharp transition into reverse breakdown. The reverse breakdown voltage must be equal to the desired output voltage and be capable of dissipating the power that results when RL is very large. The voltage drop across the Zener Diode will be equal to the Zener voltage of that diode no matter how high the reverse The Zener Diode should not be used for voltages less than 5 volts because low voltages diodes at reverse breakdown are not available. This experiment will show that smaller values for Rs will result in a greater diode current when RL is large and this in turn, will increase the power dissipation required of the diode.
