This is because change of an amino acid in a protein to a different amino acid with similar chemical property usually cause no harm to the protein with respect to its function. Similar amino acids: -acidic:E ,D - basic: K, R, (H), - polar uncharged: S, T, N, Q, C, (H), (Y) - hydrophobic: L, I, A, V, G, M, F, P, W, (Y) - some are less sure than others (e.g. Y, H).
