CMPT 250 : QUIZ 3 1. (15 marks) A proposed instruction set includes instructions which employ the following address modes: direct, indexed, and relative. Each instruction uses a format with fields as follows: Instruction(15..12): OPCODE Instruction(11..10): MODE Instruction(9..8)): REGISTER OPERAND Instruction(7..0): ADDRESS or OFFSET 1. For each address mode, explain how the address of the data value is obtained. 2. Draw an ASM diagram for the fetch cycle of a simple processor which determines the effective address of the operand and places it in a register called MAR before proceeding to the execute cycle. Assume that two CPU clock cycles are needed to retrieve a value from memory and that the value returned from memory is placed first in a buffer register called MDR. You should also include a PC register in your diagram. 3. Draw a logic diagram of the datapath required to retrieve operands as specified by your fetch cycle. Use any additional registers or combinational components as required, and show all data flow paths and select logic.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
