1. John works for a large pharmaceutical firm. His superior has ordered him to falsify test reports on a new arthritis pain reliever, writing fictitious reports on imaginary tests that were never conducted. Everyone at the company is certain that the pain reliever is completely safe and they think that the tests required by the Food and Drug Administrations are a waste of time and money. If he doesn’t’ obey his superior’s order John will probably be fired. Apply Act Utilitarianism and Rule Utilitarianism to decide whether it would be right for John to falsify this report. Utilitarianism means that you must take into account not merely the consequences for yourself, but the consequences for everyone who will probably be affected by your action. So, using the Act Utilitarianism, which means you must identify all alternative actions first, then identify who is likely to be affected by each alternative and then determine which action to choose.
