Human Sexuality Notes Chapter 2 Basic Principles of Ancient Judaism Overarching Premise o Principle: Preserving the integrity of aspects of the universe (especially separating the holy from the physical world) o Implication of Principle: Keep different kinds of phenomena separate (i.e. do not wear different kinds of cloth together) Sexuality in General o Principle: Sexual behavior is a source of ritual (routine) impurity o Implication of Principle: Impurity from sexual behavior does not result from sin or evil, engage in ritual bathing, avoid contact with holy aspects of the universe until the day following sex Sexual Behavior Outside of Marriage o Principle: Sexual behavior outside of marriage is more than a source of impurity o Implication of Principle: Specific behaviors are prohibited: a man having sex with a married woman not his wife (adultery), sex with certain relatives (incest), sex with animals (bestiality) Basic Principles of Ancient Christianity Overarching Premise o Principle: Morality is based on following the instructions provided by Jesus o Implication of Principle: Violations of morality require forgiveness from God Sexuality in General o Principle: Jesus did not address sexuality virtually at all, Paul advocated that Christians should not engage in sexual behavior at all, if they are strong-willed o Implication of Principle: Avoid “sexual irregularities” by marrying and having sex
