FSHD 450 Sexuality in the US in the 20 th century Progressive era (1910-19) 1. Women in the work force and meaning for sexual expression a. Extensions of their family origins b. When women moved into the work force during WWI, it changed their roles 2. WWI and issues of popularity a. They didn’t have high paying jobs b. Made women less dependent on their husbands and families c. Moved from being passive and lady-like to some version of not being that way d. Popularity from men was based on drinking and flashy clothing e. It moved women into some control Roaring twenties (1920-29) 1. First sexual revolution a. Increased sexual liberalism b. The whole sexuality shifted in the 20s 2. Changes in values and sexual behavior a. Commercialization of sexuality i. Sex began to sell ii. The dress and body began to become more visible iii. You began to see ankles, then knees, ect
