Kaitlin Doherty Professor Conner ENGL 199-002 11/3/09 Passing the Torch: McCandless Becoming the Next Thoreau Chris McCandless was the self appointed protégé of Henry David Thoreau. He had read Thoreau's writings and believed in what he spoke about. He had a lot of the same beliefs as Thoreau such as environmentalism, the failings of government, the use of civil disobedience, being self-reliant, and what it means to be a real man. They were both extremely environmental. Thoreau has even been credited as the father of American environmentalism. He was able to live almost completely off the land and make the most of his environment. McCandless was less directly an environmentalist but he still attempted to live off the land and to take the most of his environment in. Both Thoreau and McCandless sought to avoid the government and believed it was unnecessary. McCandless want the government to leave him alone and tells a friend, “How I feed myself is none of the government’s business.” (Krakauer p6). He avoided dealing with the government by ignoring simple laws we follow in society. He did not have insurance on his car and it was not registered, so he tried to keep
