Kaitlin Doherty Professor Ingmanson ANTH 10/30/09 Movie Write-Up The movie starts at and excavation site called Hudar in Ethiopia. It is part of the Great Rift Valley that has exposed tons of ancient rocks and fossils, which stretches from Tanzania to Ethiopia. Hudar was the site where the famous fossil was found now named Lucy. We now know that Lucy is an Australopithecus aphaeresis . When Lucy died he skeleton was persevered in water and that is why we see such a complete skeleton today. Lucy was between 3 and 4 million years old. She was about 3 1/2 feet tall and clearly bipedal. The most exciting thing about Lucy is that she still looked a lot like and ape just one that walked on two feet. Before finding Lucy scientists had assumed that our common ancestor to apes was a ape with the intelligence of a human instead we found a human with the intelligence of an ape. In Tanzania about the same time archeologists at the Laetoli site found footprints preserved in ash from volcanic activity. They found at least 2 individuals walking side by
