1 AE 221 – Spring 2004 – EXAM #2 Solutions 1. (i) A statically determinate structure is one in which the force and moment reactions (and internal resultants) can be obtained from equilibrium alone (i.e., by solving S F = 0 and S M = 0). This considerably simplifies solution of bending (and shearing) problems as the fourth order GDE is bypassed. (ii) Centroidal axes are the ones that run through the cross-section centroid, which is defined as (in the general case of an inhomogeneous cross-section): y E E 0 dA A = z E E 0 dA A = 0 The need to be used for the stress expression for bending-extension problems to be simplified into a simple linear form (iii) The shear center is the (unique) point of the cross-section (not necessarily in it) through which the application of a shear force will not cause the section to twist. It significance is that it is also the center of twist of the cross-section.
