Muhfat Alam His 125 Professor: J. Kramer Date: 10.02.2019 Hale’s Response Paper After the reconstruction era, in the southern economy and political structure were dominant by white men. Lynching was used to enforce white supremacy and intimidate blacks by racial terrorism. Besides, lots of people came to see that public lynching which event was announced through the newspaper, telegraph, radio station and so on. In that era, blacks were not just victim by lynching in public. Sometimes they have to face it by their local white southerners. So, when it comes to the public, a massive amount of people came to see lynching. Maybe the spectators came to see the lynching, which makes a space between black and white people. Besides this, spectators want to support their people and make a firm unity. Also, lynching might be their amusement for their leisure time. One of the reasons that people came to see lynching might be they were scared about the space between white and black people. In that time, the transportation systems across the region rapidly increased spatial mobility, for black as well as white southerners. This treats the southern whites that they are going to lose their space between white and black people. Black people got the same facility as the white got (Grace Elizabeth Hale's essay, "Deadly Amusement," pg 200, pp2). Formal slaves were victims in many different ways by whites.
