Phonological Analysis Notes 2/26/2008 Announcements/ Assignments: Notes: Phonologists have a feature system for the same reason that mathematicians have their notations instead of using words. The features, like symbols, contain a lot of informational into a single word. They are a way of categorizing sounds. [voice] is a category for whatever a language considers to be voiced. All other factors are ignored. Similar things can be done with all the other features. Natural classes of sounds are sounds that act alike. p t and k can undergo a modification because they are related, while p l and w won't because they are not related, for instance. Someone who has no experience in linguistics might refer to t and d as t and d. Someone in phonetics would describe them as voiceless aspirated stop and voiceless unaspirated stop. That separated sounds phonetically tends to differ form one language to the next. French, for example, will
