Comp 1 Unit 1 Overview & Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Identify strategies for effective reading comprehension skills. Identify audience. Identify purpose. Identify writing as effective or ineffective. Identify writing strategies authors use to develop main ideas and connect with the audience. Course Outcome practiced in this unit: CM107-1: Apply reading skills to determine the elements of effective writing. Reading 2 web links Effective writers understand that they are writing for a specific audience. For example, if you were writing a memo for work, the audience would be your coworkers. They would likely have very specific knowledge of the topic and expect a certain level of formality in your writing. This knowledge of audience and purpose can be applied to many different writing situations. For example, how you share information with friends and family on social media sites is likely worded very differently than how you would share information with your professor in a formal essay. The following readings will help you practice your reading comprehension skills, expand your knowledge of audience and purpose, and identify writing strategies that can help you communicate effectively with your audience.
