Effective writers understand that they are writing for a specific audience. For example, if you were
writing a memo for work, the audience would be your coworkers. They would likely have very
specific knowledge of the topic and expect a certain level of formality in your writing. This
knowledge of audience and purpose can be applied to many different writing situations. For example,
how you share information with friends and family on social media sites is likely worded very
differently than how you would share information with your professor in a formal essay. The
following readings will help you practice your reading comprehension skills, expand your
knowledge of audience and purpose, and identify writing strategies that can help you communicate
effectively with your audience.
