Linguistics 304 / 504 / Anthro 317 Problems in allophonic distribution (“Type II”) S UMMARY of steps to take in solving problems of this kind 1. Find any minimal or near-minimal pairs. If there are any, the pair of sounds are contrastive. 2. If they aren’t contrastive, make a list of the environments in which each sound occurs. 3. Come up with the simplest possible description of the set of environments for each sound. Think in terms of sound classes and general contexts (“after voiceless stops”, “before back vowels”), not individual sounds. Include only those aspects of the environment that are relevant to distinguishing the sets of environments for each sound. 4. If two sounds are in complementary distribution, your description of their environments must specify what is different about the environments in which each sound occurs. 5. Choose a lexical representation (“name of the phoneme”) for each contrastive sound. This will normally be the pronunciation which occurs in the most varied environments (“elsewhere”). 6. Write a rule specifying when a different pronunciation occurs. This will be of the form: / lexical form / –> [phonetic form] / some context… C ANADIAN F RENCH .
