PSY397 Lecture 4 & 5 October 1 The Neuron o Neurons create an electric potential difference between the outside and the inside of the cell which creates the resting potential (approximately -70mV) o Glial cells can modulate neuronal excitability Neurons are very complex o Purkinje cells located in the cerebellum; fine tuning of motor responses A neuron can have millions of synaptic connections o Associative neurons from the cortex pictured o not receiving stimuli and not sending motor commands o They process our thoughts o Dots pictured are synapses o Sodium-potassium pump creates the negative charge inside the cell o Absolute zero is when the shaking of molecules doesn’t happen/stops o Ex. a bag of ping pong balls, white on the bottom and orange on the top. If you take the bag and shake it for long enough the distribution of ping pong balls will be random o Depolarization will trigger the sodium channels to open, allowing sodium to rush in which increases depolarization which in turn causes more sodium channels to open (positive feedback). As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
