We are none of us more than twenty years old. But young? Youth? That is long ago. We are old folk” (18). I feel like this is the epitome of the war. Young men are urged to sign up at the age of 17 or 18 and are thrown into the real world when they haven’t even finished high school yet. I can’t imagine considering myself an adult that young. Fighting in a war as your first job could change the way you live the rest of your life. Coming back from a war could give you PTSD which could take a toll on your mental health. Also if you were injured in the war, you may not be able to do the things you used to be able to do before the war which could affect your mental and physical well-being. It also may take a long time to adjust back to a normal lifestyle. “For us lads of eighteen they ought to have been mediators and guides to the world of maturity . . . to the future . . . in our hearts we trusted them.
