Joel Osterhout 1 Med. Surg. Nursing 10/17/06 Critical Thinking Question 4 A major challenge to teaching patients is an implementation to basic asthma management principles at the community level. Key issues include education of health care providers, establishment of programs for asthma education, use of outpatient follow- up care for patients, and a focus on chronic management verses acute episodic care. We, as the nurse, are pivotal to achieving all of these objectives. Patient teaching is a critical component of care for the patient with asthma. , Multiple inhalers different types of inhalers, antiallergy therapy, antireflux medications, and avoidance measures are all integral for long term control. This complex therapy requires a patient- provider partnership to determine desired outcomes and to formulate to achieve those outcomes. The patient then carries out daily therapy as part of self-care management, with input and guidance by the health care worker. The patient must also understand the following :
