History 205 Byzantium: Imperial Age February 19, 2007 The Islamic Conquests 632 – Mohammed dies o Who will take over and lead the Muslim community? o There is competition among Muslims about who will be the elites after Mohammed’s death 3 groups: o Muhajirun – The original converts to Islam o Ansar – believers from Medina who helped Mohammed when he came on the Hijra o Converts from Mecca; those who converted after 632 They represent the pagan Mecca elite who converted after Mohammed died Abu Bakr – The man who is chosen to be the first Caliph ( khalifa ) o Khalifa means successor o Abu Bakr was one of the first converts (maybe the first) o He made the Hijra with Abu Bakr o He was the father of ‘A’isha – Mohammed’s third wife 632 – Abu Bakr leads a second military invasion of Syria o This one fails also The first one was led by Mohammed Mohammed had united all of the Arabian Peninsula o The tribes can’t fight amongst themselves anymore o The people had a tradition of raiding and fighting o Mohammed thought the invasion of Syria would be a good pressure release
