History of the Cold War September 18, 2007 A Cold Peace: Nonrecognition 1920-33 and the Failure of Collective Security, 1933-41 o Theme of pro-Soviet women being persuaded and converted to capitalism as a superior system Early 1920s – American relief effort to provide food for Russian children who were starving Amerikanizm in Soviet Russia o Admiration in Soviet Russia for America’s energetic and modern way of life America was seen as the most modern industrialized country o Mix Soviet revolutionary ideals with America’s energetic efficiency to produce the ideal for the USSR o Initial desire for an economic relationship with the United States Lenin encouraged American capitalists to invest in Soviet Russia Encouraged American engineers to come help the USSR modernize Aspects of the American system were reproduced in Russia i.e. Soviet tractors were modeled on Ford tractors Anti-Americanism in Soviet Russia o Although some aspects of America were admired, there was a fear that the people would be seduced by the American system on a whole o Anti-Americanism played out in propaganda claims: A serious crime takes place in America every 20 seconds Racism is rampant Hypocrisy of organized religion Missed opportunity in 1920s? o Shifts in Soviet foreign policies Shift from revolution to survival and “peaceful coexistence” Lenin argued that preserving the Soviet state was more important than taking risks in exporting Bolshevism Soviets came to realize that world revolution was not imminent as they
