History 262 Modern Latin America February 26, 2007 Modern Women At the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century, Latin Americans were trying to modernize in the European model o Lots of great changes taking place o However, only Mexico actually had a revolution Where was Latin America at in terms of gender relations before the changes? o Women had no voting rights o Women had less job opportunities Women earn lower wages o There was a concept of honor in Latin America Men Provide for his family Protect his woman and child Women Be a virgin o Typical patriarchal society Honor takes on a different construct for working class people o Women have to work also to earn a living o Too expensive to be married in a church Machismo o Male duties and honor Marianismo o Female duties and honor The wars of the 19 th century dramatically altered gender relations because so many men died while fighting o Women are forced to also become providers for the families
