History 262 Modern Latin America January 29, 2007 Lecture 3 – War: What is it Good For? During the 19 th century, there was constant war somewhere in Latin America o Historians have ignored war as a reason for the gap between North and South America First wars of 19 th century were the wars of independence throughout Latin America o They lasted for about 15 years Before the wars, mining (gold and silver) was the major industry of the Latin American colonies o During the wars, the mines were not upheld; they flooded and degraded o All transportation was used for the military o Mexico’s economy took 60-70 years to recover from the wars Wealthy investors did not invest in the infrastructure of the country during the wars of independence o It was poor business to invest in agriculture or mining because those industries were collapsing due to the wars o People tried to get their money out of the country, or they invested in the wartime economy o The European forces destroyed the infrastructure of the countries
