Cause advocacy involves efforts by social workers to address a problem that is of primary
importance to some client group. The emphasis is on the reason why this type of advocacy
affects several groups, (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Over the previous months, I have been
engaged with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as a group participant and
facilitator. With NAMI, I engaged as a cause advocate for helping a group of individuals move
past the stigma of mental illness. This advocacy attracted me because I myself have had to
resolve issues resulting from depression. To prepare myself, I worked with NAMI to become a
trained Connections and Peer-to-Peer facilitator. With these trainings and certifications, I can
facilitate groups which provide support, information, experience sharing, advocacy, and methods
of advocacy.
According to Kirst-Ashman and Hull, (2018) state that an effective client advocate must know
the rights and entitlements of clients.
