SACS World Music Performances Comparison Assignment This assignment has been created in accordance with the university’s SACS Multicultural Assessment requirement, which mandates that students in this course complete an assignment that demonstrates “the ability to analyze and synthesize knowledge about cultural variation within and between cultures.”To meet this requirement, all students must submit a 4-5 page (1000-1250 word), double-spaced, compare-and-contrast essay that focuses on the performances of two FSU world music ensembles. The required format for this assignment is outlined in detail later in this document. The majority of the FSU world music concerts are held near the end of the semester and most take place at the FSU College of Music in Opperman Music Hall. Your instructor will post a list of assignment-eligible performances early in the semester. Many of the concerts feature two ensembles representative of two contrasting musicultural traditions, so if you attend one of those concerts it will be possible to base your entire assignment on that single concert event. Another option for spring semester world music classes is to attend and write your assignment on the annual FSU Rainbow Concert of World Music, in which all of the FSU world music ensembles (usually about 10 of them) perform. In that case, you would focus on any two of the groups for your assignment and could just enjoy the rest of the ensembles. Finally, you could choose to attend two separate world music concerts and base your essay on one group featured in one of the concerts and one group featured in the other. Since you must submit assignment in order to pass this course, it is imperative to plan ahead!! Additionally, plan to get to the concert(s) early (at least 15 minutes ahead of start time), as they sometimes reach full capacity and you don’t want to be turned away! Most concerts start at 7:30 p.m. This essay should be written in the style of a concert review. A sample assignment is included at the end of this document for your reference (note: the ensembles discussed here are fictional; they do not exist at FSU). Essays will be evaluated for content as well as for writing proficiency. The assignment must be typed, double-spaced, and submitted according to the specified submission requirements of your instructor. Usually that will involve uploading the assignment via Canvas. Format and instructions: The assignment should include a title page, on which you indicate: oname of the ensembles who performed olocation of the concert oconcert date and starting time otime the concert concluded MUSIC IN WORLD CULTURES MUH 2051- 2 SPRING 2019 MWF 11:15-12:05
Take a photograph of the concert program(s) and attach with your assignment submission as verification of your attendance. If you want to add a selfie that would be awesome!
