1IntroductionSTAT 292 uses the statistical computing package SAS Enterprise Guide. Work throughthe first 12 pages of these notes in Weeks 1-3, so that you can start to use the packagefor your later assignments. These notes were originally written by Shirley Pledger andRay Brownrigg, with more recent modifications made by John Haywood.SAS Enterprise Guide is a point-and-click menu-driven package, so you select the typeof analysis from a menu of options. You do not need to write long computer programs.1.1Where?You may do your computing in the CyberCommons rooms KK216, KK217, KK218 andMY221, or on any of the Student Computing Services machines in Rankine Brownbuilding (i.e. the main library). These computers are available to you 24/7 (except inhours when the CyberCommons are booked for a class). Evening and weekend accessis via your student card. If you are enrolled in the course but have access problems, please see Campus Care. For more information about the CyberCommons rooms andcomputers, see Section 1.4.Alternatively, you may work off a home copy of SAS Enterprise Guide, using your ownPC or laptop (Windows PC, not a Mac). You’ll need to obtain and install a USB memorykey from the VUW Library. Go to Vic Info Ihonui help desk (near main entrance of theLibrary on level 2) with your current ID card. Find a Vic Info person (wearing a redjacket) and ask for a SAS USB memory key. This will be issued in the same way as anybook from the library on 3-day (or perhaps shorter) loan. The installation instructionsappear in a PDF file ’INSTALLING SAS SOFTWARE FROM USB, 20XX’ on the USBkey (where 20XX represents the current year). Please read and follow the instructionscarefully.1.2When?The best option for getting started is to attend any (or all!) of the hours booked forSTAT 292 during Weeks 2 and 3. The times and rooms are listed on Blackboard. Atutor will be available to give informal, individual help. Arrive and depart at any timeyou please during those hours.
