The concept of motivation explains why people: Initiate- start doing something Maintain- keep with the behavior End- why they quit the behavior Theories of motivation: Drive reduction theory Optimal level of arousal theory Cognitive dissonance theory Drive reduction theory: Homeostasis- balance in an organism Need- desire for something, lack of balance Drive- arousal of energy to do something Behavior- balance is restored by behavior The behavior is reducing the drive.
