No certain trends How do we justify colonialism and acknowledge there culture Two that can kinda be made - Orientalism – refers to the early positive effort by the Europeans towards tenets of Indian society and culture, among the Orientals were itelecturals with genuine interest in understanding sanskirt and Persian text, some where interested in translating the primary tet for western audiences, adminstrators tried to study indian codes and laws, wanted to find issues with hindu culture and use that as reason to make them more british and colonized. – missionaries focused on the classical ancient period of the high muslim culture, the high traditions of Hinduism and islam -> orientalism led to a certain Bengal renaissance, from the interaction of Europeans and Indian elites, - Set up institutions in india - College of fort William, the hindu culture, sanskirpt college, Calcutta school book society - Bengal renaissance – emergence of a new social grouping of regional Bengal elites lay at the foundation of this, lord marquis hastings made a deliberate cultural policy made to reach out to the local elite – an elite class that viewed the contemporary west with sympathy – this elite class is behind the founding of the hindu college, this class also sympathetic to orientalism style, if sons educated westernly they could get jobs better, education more western focused, - Looked appreciatively at useful western knowledge like science, western history and literature, orientalist insist that western knowledge was not to be an end in itself but a tool to reform indegious culture from with, made such knowledge acceptable to the Bengal - Sanskript college – Experiment in cultural fusion – provided the broad intellectual moorings for developing cultural consciousness among intellectual - Serampore – Baptist missionaries set up first printing press - Dwarkanath tagore – big into newspapers. Both indian and English language, plantation owners, one of the few Indian ones, indigo plantation, Progressive and conservatives ? Most of the elite class was a mix of both Radhakant Deb – Part of the Calcutta Bengali-hindu elite that owed its wealth and social status to profitable relations with Europeans, some had business set up that would serve the empire
