Arya ShindeMs StechAp Literature December 9, 2019 Flash Fiction Essay In “What Happened During The Ice Storm” by Jim Heynen, Heynen uses a variety of literary devices, carefully picked out diction and irony in order to present human nature and to show how people can take different approaches to the same situation. In Heynan’s story, readers are acquainted with a village experiencing harsh winter conditions through the form of “freezing rain” which has been precipitating for extended periods of time, resulting in ice forming on nearly everything which came into contact with the rain. The duality of winter is showcased here, as on the one hand the villagers regard as serene and beautiful, but on the other hand it is harsh, dangerous and unforgiving. The reader is made aware of this almost right off the bat as Heynan writes “How beautiful! people said when things outsidestarted to shine with ice…Tree branches glistened like glass. Then broke like glass.” After the villagers finally realize the threat that the rain poses, the farmers shelter most of their livestock so as to stop any injury but they don't do anything for the creatures of the wild, namely the pheasants. The pheasants become blinded by layers of ice forming on their eyes due to the rain
