Dr. Teutsch WRT 120 Advertising Close your eyes and think: advertisement; what comes to your mind? Perhaps you picture a famous athlete with a milk mustache and the words ‘got milk’ sprawled across the bottom of the page; or maybe you see a handsome buff young man sipping an ice cold beer with half naked women at his sides. Either way advertisers get into the minds of the consumer and create favorable, but unlikely, situations in order to convince others to buy their product. “Advertising robs us of the most intimate moments in our lives because it substitutes an advertiser’s idea of what ought to be – What should a romantic moment be like?” (Chiat p.193) Advertisers dabble with the reality of the people they are trying to persuade. When a man and women see a commercial for engagement rings, it alters their perspective of how the situation should and could be like. The man now believes that the ring has to be in between a certain price in order to show his love and the women expects it to be a particular size and the proposal to be a specific way. Commercials steal the way special moments in our lives are played out. When television portray the lives of ‘real life’ people on television it makes the public believe that their way of living is not the
