Thomas Paine wrote the pamphlet, "Common Sense", to denounce British rule. Because of its immense popularity, it contributed to the commencing of the American Revolution. Although Thomas Paine was an Englishman, he mainly supported the American side in this situation because of the many flaws in British rule. He thought that it was ridiculous and against natural law for an island (Great Britain) to rule a continent (America). It might appear that Britain is the parent country of America because they were the first to send settlers, but Paine argues that “Europe, and not England, is the parent country of America.” He solidifies this point by stating: “The first king of England, of the present line (William the Conqueror), was a Frenchman, and half the Peers of England are descendants from the same country; wherefore, the by same method of reasoning, England ought to be governed by France…” (p. 123) This quotation helped some colonists that were partially loyal to the King understand that Britain is not our
