NOTES ON FOLLOWING TOPICS Qing Empire (Manchus) The Qing Empire was the last dynasty in China. During it, Europeans in China could only trade in the city of Canton where they bought luxury goods. Chinese bought European silver but were uninterested in other European products. The British were unhappy with trade in China because the Chinese did not want European goods and didn’t trust the Europeans. Although there was a law against Opium, it wasn’t enforced in China and there were a growing number of addicts. Finally, the authorities upheld the law and seized Opium. Role of Confucianism Confucianism was used by the Qing government, to urge citizens to follow their religious principles of behavior. The Civil Service System was created with regard to Confucian ideals and respect for rank. It stressed the value of civic participation and action. Wealthy individuals tried to use the Civil Service to get favors from the government. China abandoned the traditional exams, saying that a knowledge of classical literature was not helpful for the modern government. After the civil war, China became a republic and adapted to western culture and ideas. But, the West soon dominated China, overthrew most of the Chinese traditions and kept most of the profits of China’s economy. Many Chinese laborers emigrated to European colonies in search of work because the rebellions left many of them in poverty. The Chinese who emigrated brought their traditions and culture to their new countries and built ethnic enclaves called Chinatowns in almost every city of the world.
