OFF, An Insect Repellent Author: T.A: Forrest Helfrich Date Performed: April 2 nd 2007 Date Submitted: April 9 th 2007 Abstract: In this experiment, OFF insect repellent was synthesized. The percent recovery found was 18.9%. It was found through two different IR spectrums that the amine appeared at 3485.3. The c=o peak was found to be at 1763.11 and the benzene ring was found at 1632.64. This shows that the desired product of N,N-diethyl m- toluamide was produced.

Introduction Insect repellent are used repeatedly in today’s society. Insect repellent is used to right off many different kinds of bugs. OFF temporarily disables the carbon dioxide sensor in mosquitoes and permanently disables the insect’s water detector. In this experiment, OFF insect repellent is going to be synthesized to illustrate the synthesis of an amide through an acid chloride.
