- Soybeans are about 18% oil and 38% protein. -Soybeans are processed for their oil (see uses below) and meal (for the animal feed industry). A smaller percentage is processed for human consumption and made into products including soy milk, soy flour, soy protein, tofu and many retail food products. Soybeans are also used in many non-food (industrial) products, including biodiesel. -Herbicide resistant GM soy (Roundup Ready) -In traditional soybean cultivation, farmers plow the soil, particularly for weed control before planting, whereas GMO soybean cultivation is generally a no-till method and doesn’t need any soil preparation, so farmers save time, money and labor. (No till also limits the release of greenhouse gases). Because they can sow earlier in the season, farmers are also able to grow two crops a year rather than just one. - A standard bushel of soybeans weighs 60 lb and is 13% moisture -S ingle crop beans (which are planted earlier) can begin to be harvested in late September
