Nobels on the ship: o Alonso – king of Naples o Sebastian – Alonso’s brother o Antonio – Prospero’s brother o Gonzalo o Others Don’t learn the men’s names in this scene They’re coming from Tunis in Africa where Alonso’s daughter, Claribel, was married to a prince there. When they get to the top deck the boatswain tells them to go back below, Gonzalo mentions Alonso’s importance, the boatswain only cares about saving the ship. They go below decks Sebastian and Antonio curse the boatswain, masking their fear with anger Mariners (boat crew) enter wet and crying, We learn the identity of all the passengers Gonzalo tells everyone to pray for the king (Alonso) We hear a loud thunderous noise, splitting wood, etc Everyone preparing to sink The scene has a lot of chaotic activity Act 1 Scene 2 Part 1 Scene starts with Prospero and Miranda standing on the shore of an island They just watched the ship wreck – implied that Prospero caused the storm Miranda wonders if everyone is dead, wants to go check but Prospero ensures her that no one is harmed Prospero starts telling Miranda who she is and where she came from Prospero is the former duke of Milan and famous for his great intelligence Tells her that his brother Antonio usurped him because he slacked off on his duties and focused on his studies The king of Naples (Alonso) helped Antonio become duke and Prospero and Miranda escaped to this island with the help of Gonzalo Prospero charms Miranda to sleep Calls forth his spirit Ariel (we learn for sure that Prospero caused the storm) Ariel acted as the wind/thunder/lightning When everyone (all the nobles) except the crew abandoned ship, Ariel brought them all to the island, also tells Prospero that the king’s son (Ferdinand) is alone. The Boatswain/mariners have been charmed to sleep on the ship and the ship was safely parked in the harbour on the island while the rest of the fleet headed back to Naples 1
Ariel is thanked and reminds Prospero of a previous agreement between them to reduce Ariel’s service by a year if Ariel performed these duties without complaint Prospero is upset by this and gets angry at Ariel for bringing it up Prospero reminds Ariel that he saved him from being a servant of Sycorax (a witch/Caliban’s mother) Ariel was too fragile(kind) to perform the evil commands that Sycorax wanted so she imprisoned Ariel in a tree (cloven pine in the play) and did not free Ariel before she died, so Ariel might have been imprisoned forever if Prospero hadn’t of come to the island and saved him (Ariel) Prospero threatens to imprison Ariel for 12 years if he keeps complaining, to which Ariel promises to be polite.
