PSYC 372-005: Study guide for cumulative portion of Final Exam As mentioned in class, only a portion of the final exam is cumulative and the majority of the exam will be on material covered after Exam II (i.e. Learning/Memory, Emotion, Schizophrenia, and Drug Addiction). I expect the cumulative portion of the exam to have 25 multiple-choice questions, and the rest of the exam to have 50 multiple-choice/fill-in-the-blank questions as usual. The only old material you will need to know is what is contained on this study guide. You will also notice that there are 25 bullet-points on this portion of the study guide…so you can expect one question for each of these items…We will go over this portion of the study guide this Monday after lecture. Another study guide will be posted over the weekend for the remainder of the material. Exam I Material Unique components of a neuron – main information receivers, main information senders, where are NT’s released from o Dendrites – receives information from other neurons o Soma/cell body – metabolic functions/integrates signals o Axon – transmits information via electrical signal o Presynaptic terminal – point of neurotransmitter release Why is it important that the plasma membrane of a neuron separates electrical charge? What membrane proteins contribute to separating electrical charge? o Because it is used to distribute the ions across the ion channel, Na+,K+ What is the concentration gradient? The electrical gradient? o Ions tend to diffuse from regions of high conc. to regions of low conc o Opposite electrical charges attract What electrical event occurs on the axon that signals NT release at the presynaptic terminal? o
