Lectures 19 Protein Metabolism Intestinal Cells The amino acids absorbed into the intestinal cells can undergo significant metabolism. Peptides that are absorbed are broken down to individual amino acids in the intestinal cells. Intestinal cells will use amino acids for protein synthesis (i.e. lipoproteins for chylomicrons, digestive enzymes, etc). Glutamine is used as a primary energy source for intestinal cells and can even stimulate proliferation. Glutamine may also be converted to glutamate and ammonia. The ammonia travels to the liver for use in urea synthesis. Glutamate is converted to α –ketoglutarate for the TCA cycle. Glutamate can also be combined with glycine and cysteine to form glutathione. Glutathione is an antioxidant.
