WFC 50 Winter 2009 Draft 01/27/09 STUDY GUIDE FOR MIDTERM EXAM The midterm will cover material from both LECTURE and LAB through January 30 (grassland lecture and deserts lab). Nothing unique will be pulled from the readings, but it is still useful to review materials from the Atlas and Natural History book referred to in class. These will better help inform your essays. The format of the midterm is short essay. You will write directly on the paper exam and do not need to bring a blue book. You will be asked to write ½ page essays on your choice of 5 of the 8 test questions in this 50-minute exam. Key concepts: Natural history and how it contributes to our understanding of CA’s biota and ecosystems Ecology Conservation Biology Biome, California’s biomes The Mediterranean biome and climate Climate and what controls it in California from place to place? Vegetation as an important control of habitat Habitat Ecosystem Vertebrates and common names for major classes of vertebrates Biodiversity/species richness
