Unformatted text preview: resonance structures : Remember, only electrons move, not atomic nuclei!!! (1)Structures in which all atoms have octets are usually more important than those where the octet rule is not satisfied for all atoms. OCTET STRUCTURES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN NON-OCTET STRUCTURES!!! (3) Relative importance of non-octet structures increases with increasing electronegativity difference between atoms. In such cases it is generally better to place negative formal charges on more electronegative atoms, and positive formal charges on less electronegative atoms. (2) All else being equal, structures with minimum formal charges are relatively more important....
