Comm. 88 October 7, 2008 Overview of Major Research Methods A. Quantitative Research: (patterns) A. Adheres strongly to scientific goals and principles. B. Employs numerical measures and data analysis. (Statistical analysis) Ex. Surveys, experiments, content analysis. II. Survey/Correlational Research A. Researchers measure variables (uses set of survey questions or makes other observations), looks at relationships between variables. 1. Survey does not mean the paper you hand out! 2. Survey is a method of study. 3. The paper you hand out is titled “questionnaire” B. Important Issues: 1. Representative sample of participants. a. Represents the larger population. 2. Good questions/measures C. Advantage: 1. To be able to generalize results (to other people and to “normal life” settings) = high external validity. a. Want to be able to say the information found is true for a certain factor. b.
