Comm. 88 Lecture 9 October 28, 2008 I. Survey Research A. Primary Goals 1. Identify/describe attitudes or behaviors (in a given population) (Identify=I want know why, describe = details) 2. Examine relationships between the attitude/behavior variables measured. a. Does X predict/relate to Y? (Does gender predict relationship satisfaction?) b. Do A, B, & C together predict Y? (Multiple factors that relate to one prediction i.e. age, gender, ethnicity predict relationship satisfaction) II. Administering Surveys A. Self-Administered Questionnaires (doing it on your own without the researchers help) 1. Mail Surveys a. Send out hard copy and bubble in answers b. Also online or emailed questionnaires; handouts. c. Easy to do and inexpensive. d. No interviewer influence (nobody is watching you) e. Increased privacy/anonymity (cannot be seen so you are more likely to be honest with responses) 2. Mail Survey Problems: a. Cannot rely on everyone responding b. Must be self-explanatory (wording has to be very clear cut
