I. Interpersonal Means A. Communication within the individual 1. Making sense of people through the following mental perception processes. a. Attention b. Organization c. Interpretation B. Attention 1. Perception is selective 2. Internal factors affecting attention: a. Physiological filters (limitations of our senses) b. Psychological filters i. Motivation or interest ii. Past experience or expectations 3. External Factors affecting attention a. Salience: stimulus stands out from others (visual contrast, sound, movement, etc.) b. Vividness: stimulus provokes emotional response (when there is a picture to a story, research proves that people pay more attention to the story with a picture) C. Organization 1. Perception is structured a. Proximity: we perceive separate stimuli as related if close to each other. (If picture of lines and circles are presented and lines are next to each other and circles are next to each other then we associate them as separate because they are not as close as their similar shape)
