10 steps in glycolysis. Each step is catalyzed by its own enzyme. Generate 2 ATPs. “energy investment phase” where ATP is consumed, and “payoff phase” where ATP is generated. 3 of the steps are irreversible; these steps are regulated.

What happens to the pyruvate? Pyruvate may be converted to lactate: Making lactate regenerates NAD+ that is required for step 6 of glycolysis! (this can keep glycolysis going until too much lactate builds up). Other things that can be done with pyruvate: It can enter the TCA cycle (next class !) Pyruvate is also a precursor for making alanine (a.a. synthesis, soon). In yeast, pyruvate is a precursor for ethanol.

Can glycolysis run the other way, to make glucose from pyruvate? Yes ! (but with some modifications). The reverse of glycolysis is called “ gluconeogenesis ”. Gluconeogenesis consumes ATP. So what is the point of gluconeogenesis??? Think about your brain. It needs glucose, but it can’t make glucose. You do not want your brain to run out of glucose between meals !!! So gluconeogenesis is a handy tool to have (in your liver!), for when you are running low on glucose.
