Professional Dominance of Physicians Physicians hold extensive control over the organization, laws, clinical  practice, and financing of medical care and its ability to promote its  own autonomy, prestige, and income. How do physicians achieve this dominance? By convincing the public that the medical professional: o does valuable work o requires high standards for entry o has rigorous educational standards o can be trusted to perform its work ethically o can be trusted to police itself. Next step is  legal autonomy  = power to license new members,  regulate all members
