SOC 354K Part 2: Health and Illness Behaviors / Health Professions Wednesday, 10/14 Physicians and the Profession of Medicine ( Gawande ) Objectives o Wrap-up critiques of the current medical school system, and efforts to reform it. o Quickly look at a selection of Texas medical schools’ curricula o Discussion about medical errors – Gawande What is Medical school? Years 1 and 2 Years 3 and 4 Critiques of Medical Education Curriculum 1. Too little emphasis on teaching 2. Curriculum is not integrated 3. Heavy emphasis to memorize facts (passive learning) rather than on learning problem solving/analytic skills (active learning) Also, little emphasis on the sociocultural aspects of health and individuals’ health behaviors, communication skills, and reflection on ethical questions 4. Continues to focus on acute health problems, when the majority of deaths (about 75%) are due to chronic disease. Largely ignores the importance of: o preventive health care o lifestyle education o influence of social factors on disease and illness
